first classify the soil as either a Type A, B, or C soil or stable rock, before selecting the
appropriate slope configuration (refer to the Caltrans Trenching and Shoring Manual for
DOSH Standards when reviewing a Contractor’s excavation safety plan).
Surcharge loads must be located a sufficient distance back from the edge of excavations to
maintain slope stability. For sloped excavations, the minimum setback can be determined
from Figure 4-11.
