General Construction Specifications

   PART 1 - GENERAL

    01 SECTION INCLUDES

    A. Refer to drawings for areas of demolition work.

    02 PROTECTION

    A. Do not interfere with use of existing facilities. Maintain safe passage to and from the existing facilities.

    B. Prevent movement or settlement of structure. Provide and place bracing or shoring and be responsible for safety and support of structure.

    C. Cease operations and notify the Engineer immediately, if safety of structure appears to be endangered. Take precautions to properly support structure. Do NOT resume operations until safety is restored.

    03 EXISTING SERVICES

    A. Arrange and pay for disconnecting, removing and capping utility services within areas of demolition. Disconnect and stub off.

    B. Place markers to indicate the locations of disconnected services. Identify service lines and capping locations on Project Record Documents in accordance with Section 01720.

   PART 2 - PRODUCTS

    04 MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

    A. Except where noted otherwise, immediately remove materials being demolished.

    B. Items Required for Reinstallation:

    1. Carefully remove, store and protect materials and equipment scheduled for reinstallation.

    C. Items to be Retained by Owner:

    1. Carefully remove materials and equipment to be retained by the Owner. Deliver and store where directed by Owner.

    D. Concrete Structures:

    1. Concrete structures to be demolished in areas where new construction is not interfered with shall be demolished to three feet below finished grade and backfilled in place.

    05 TEMPORARY PARTITIONS

    A. Erect weatherproof closures for exterior openings. Maintain exit requirements.

    B. Erect and maintain dustproof partitions as required to prevent spread of dust, fumes and smoke to other parts of the building. On completion, remove partitions and repair damaged surfaces to match adjacent surfaces.

    C. During the removal of the existing parapets and roofing, provide proper protection from falling objects over entrances which are to be kept open during normal working hours.

   PART 3 - EXECUTION

    06 DEMOLITION WORK

    A. Perform demolition in accordance with applicable authorities having jurisdiction.

    B. Carry out demolition work to cause as little inconvenience to adjacent occupied building areas as possible.

    C. Demolish in an orderly and careful manner as required to accommodate new work, including that required for connection to the existing building. Protect existing foundations and supporting structural members.

    D. Burning of materials on site is NOT permitted.

    E. Remove from site, without delay, all contaminated, vermin infested and dangerous materials encountered and dispose of by safe means so as not to endanger health of workers and public.

    F. Remove demolished materials, tools and equipment from site on a regular basis; do NOT allow them to accumulate. Upon completion of work, leave building site in a condition acceptable to the Engineer.

    G. All equipment in areas to be demolished shall be disposed of or retained by the Owner as determined by the Engineer. Materials retained by the Owner shall be transported to the maintenance building for the Department of Water and Sewerage Services.

    07 HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

    A. In the event the Contractor encounters on the site material reasonably believed to be asbestos, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) or other toxic material which has not been rendered harmless, the Contractor shall immediately stop work in the area affected and report the condition to the Engineer in writing.

    B. Work in the affected area shall not be resumed except by written agreement of the Owner and Contractor and until:

    1. The suspected material is proven not to be asbestos, PCB or other toxic material, or;

    2. The suspected material is removed or rendered harmless.

    C. The Contractor shall not be required to perform without consent any work relating to asbestos, polychlorinated biphenol (PCB), or other toxic material.

    08 RESTORATION

    A. Repair all demolition performed in excess of that required at no cost to the Owner. Leave in as good condition as existed before commencement of demolition work.

    B. Materials and workmanship used in restoring the work shall conform in type and quality to that of original existing construction, except as otherwise shown or specified.
