SECTION 02271
RIP-RAP
PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. This section shall include furnishing and placings of rubble stone rip-rap for permanent stabilization of banks that were disturbed by construction.
1.2 UNIT PRICE
A. Rip-Rap
1. Measurement of rip-rap will be made at the unit price bid per square yard installed. The quantity of rip-rap to be paid for shall be computed from the formula "width x length - allowable for payment" as expressed in square yard.
2. Payment for rip-rap shall be limited to areas as shown on the Contract Drawings or as otherwise designated by the Engineer.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 MATERIALS
A. Rip-rap shall be graded so that at least 80 percent of the stone shall be not less than 8 inches by 12 inches. These specifications for rip-rap are generally similar to Tennessee Department of Transportation Specifications for rubble-stone rip-rap.
B. If suitable rock material can be obtained from the excavation, the excavated rock material may be used; if not, the Contractor shall import material.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 INSTALLATION
A. Immediately prior to the construction of rip-rap, the slopes or ground surface shall be trimmed to the lines and sub-grade required by the Engineer, and shall be thoroughly compacted by the use of hand tamps.
B. Rip-rap shall be constructed upon the prepared foundation and the stones shall be set or placed as close together as is practical in order to reduce the voids to a minimum. The rip-rap shall be 12 inches in depth and shall not vary more than 2 inches plus or minus. Each stone shall be bedded with the depth perpendicular to the surface upon which it is set. Each main stone shall be placed against the adjoining stones with sides and ends in contact. The stone shall be placed in such manner as to stagger all joints insofar as possible.
