General Construction Specifications

   PART 1 - GENERAL

    01 SECTION INCLUDES

    A. Single-ply sheet membrane waterproofing system, cold-applied, for vertical installation on all new cast in place concrete walls below grade and at existing walls where existing waterproofing is exposed by adjoining new construction or is damaged by excavation.

    02 REFERENCE STANDARDS

    A. ASTM D146 - Methods of Sampling and Testing Bitumen-Saturated Felts and Fabrics Used in Roofing and Waterproofing.

    B. ASTM D412 - Test Methods for Rubber Properties in Tension.

    C. ASTM D1228 - Testing Asphalt Insulating Siding Surfaced with Mineral Granules.

    D. ASTM E96 - Test Methods for Water Vapor Transmission of Materials.

    E. ASTM E154 - Methods of Testing Materials for Use as Vapor Barriers Under Concrete Slabs and as Ground Cover in Crawl Spaces.

    1.02 QUALITY ASSURANCE

    A. Waterproofing system for this work shall consist of materials and components for complete and watertight installations from a manufacturer with a "single-source" responsibility and warranty.

    B. Waterproofing work shall be performed exclusively by a firm certified in writing by waterproofing manufacturer as being qualified to perform the work of this section and having a minimum of three years of successful experience in this type of work.

    C. Curing compounds and form release agents shall be chemically compatible with materials used in the work of this section.

    1. This must be evaluated before starting waterproofing work.

    1.03 SUBMITTALS

    A. Submit the following in accordance with Section 01340.

    B. Manufacturer's Product Data: Indicating all technical information which specifies full compliance with requirements of this section, including installation specifications.

    1. Data must be clearly marked to identify all materials and accessories which the waterproofing manufacturer approves as being a complete waterproofing system guaranteed as a "single-responsibility" system for compliance with this section.

    C. Manufacturer's Data: Which verify that curing compounds and form release agents used in Division 3 concrete work are chemically compatible with materials used for waterproofing work.

    D. Qualification Letter: From waterproofing manufacturer clearly describing installer's qualifications as required under Quality Assurance in this section.

    E. Samples: 12" x 12" size of the following:

    1. Waterproofing membrane.

    2. Protection board.

    1.04 DELIVERY, HANDLING, STORAGE

    A. Products shall be delivered to job-site in original unopened packages bearing manufacturer's labels in accordance with Section 01610 and in strict compliance with manufacturer's published instructions.

    B. Store and protect products in accordance with Section 01620 and in strict compliance with manufacturer's published instructions.

   PART 2 - PRODUCTS

    03 SHEET MEMBRANE SYSTEM

    A. Type: W. R. Grace "BITUTHENE" Membrane Waterproofing System, self-adhering, preformed pliable membrane of rubberized asphalt integrally bonded to polyethylene sheeting, complete with primers, accessories and protection board required for complete and watertight installation.

    1. All materials and accessories must be only of types recommended by waterproofing manufacturer to maintain a "single-source" responsibility and warranty.

    B. Membrane type shall be "Bituthene 4000".

    C. Waterproofing membrane shall be of quality which conforms to the following when tested in accordance with ASTM Test Methods and Grace Tests:

    1. Pliability: 180o bend over 1" mandrel at -25oF/ASTM D146.

    2. Tensile Strength: 250 psi minimum/ASTM D412 (Die C) modified.

    3. Elongation-ultimate failure of rubberized asphalt: 300% minimum/ASTM D412 (Die C) modified.

    4. Cycling over 1" joint at -15oF: No effect, 1000 cycles/Grace Test.

    5. Peel Adhesion: 5.0 lb/inch; Grace Test.

    6. Puncture Resistance: Bituthene membrane stretched by blunt object/40 lb. minimum/ASTM E154.

    7. Resistance to Hydrostatic Head: 150 ft. of water minimum/Grace Test.

    8. Exposure to fungi in soil, 16 weeks, unaffected/GSA-PBS 07111.

    9. Permeance-Perms, 0.1 grains/sq. ft/hr/in. Hg/ASTM E96, Method B.

    10. Water Absorption - 72 hrs: 0.25% by weight maximum/ASTM D1228.

    B. Protection Board: Of type approved by waterproofing manufacturer as being compatible with waterproofing membrane.

    1. Thickness: 1/2 inch minimum.

    C. Substitutions: Products of the following manufacturers are acceptable subject to requirements of this section.

    1. Mirafi, Inc./Charlotte, NC

    2. Pecora Corp./Harleysville, PA

    3. Polyguard Products Inc/Ennis, Texas.

    4. Carlisle Syntec Systems/Carlisle, PA.

    5. QSC Products, Ltd./Sapulpa, Oklahoma.

   PART 3 - EXECUTION

    04 PREPARATION

    A. Before starting waterproofing work, items which penetrate surfaces to receive waterproofing shall be rigidly installed.

    B. Prepare surfaces for foundation waterproofing work in strict compliance with manufacturer's published installation specifications (copy reviewed by Architect).

    1. Concrete surfaces must be adequately cured.

    2. Concrete must be smooth and monolithic, and must be free of voids, spalled areas, loose aggregate and sharp protrusions. Coarse aggregate shall not be visible.

    3. Repair defects such as spalled or poorly consolidated areas.

    4. Remove sharp protrusions and form match lines.

    5. If walls are rough, use a well-adhered parge coat to achieve a smooth coat.

    6. Clean surfaces to remove dirt, oil and other contaminants.

    7. Do not perform waterproofing work on damp or frozen surfaces.

    3.02 INSTALLATION

    A. Beginning of installation means the substrate is accepted as being properly prepared in accordance with waterproofing manufacturer's published installation specifications.

    B. Perform waterproofing in strict compliance with manufacturer's published installation specifications (copy reviewed by Architect).

    1. Ensure temperature requirements are complied with as recommended by manufacturer.

    2. Press waterproofing membranes in place to eliminate pockets, wrinkles or similar deficiencies.

    C. Protection Boards:

    1. Before installing protection board, the completed waterproofing work must be thoroughly inspected and corrections made in accordance with waterproofing manufacturer's specifications, if required.

    2. After waterproofing is accepted as being in compliance with manufacturer's specifications protection boards shall be installed.

    3. Neatly fit boards around pipes and projections.

    4. Adhere boards in place as recommended by waterproofing manufacturer.

    D. Backfilling work shall be performed only after waterproofing work with protection boards has been observed by Architect.
