   PART 1 - GENERAL

    01 SECTION INCLUDES

    A. Fire barrier safing insulation.

    C. UL 1479 - Fill, Void or cavity Materials and Through-Penetration Firestop Systems.

    1.02 QUALITY ASSURANCE

    A. Applicator shall be experienced and trained in the techniques of applying firestop sealant and foam, and shall be thoroughly familiar with recommendations of manufacturer for specified firestop sealant and foam.

    B. Completed applications shall meet requirements for scheduled UL rating when tested per ASTM E814.

    1.03 SUBMITTALS

    A. Submit the following in accordance with Section 01340.

    B. Manufacturer's Product Data: Indicating full compliance with requirements of this section; installation instructions.

    1.04 DELIVERY, HANDLING, STORAGE

    A. Firestopping materials shall be delivered in original unopened packages, containers or bundles bearing manufacturer's labels.

    1. Labels shall indicate brand name and other descriptive data confirming compliance with specifications.

    2. Comply with Section 01610.

    B. Store and protect firestopping materials in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and Section 01620.

    1. Maintain temperature and humidity within ranges required by manufacturer's instructions.

   PART 2 - PRODUCTS

    03 SAFING INSULATION

    A. Semi-Rigid Type: USG's "Thermafiber" Safing Insulation, 4 pcf density, unfaced, asbestos-free.

    04 FIRE CAULK

    A. USG's "Thermafiber" Smoke Seal Caulking Compound.

    B. Dow-Corning's "Firestop Sealant".

    C. Conforming to ASTM E84 and UL1479.

    D. Primer: By same manufacturer as caulk, if required.

    05 INTUMESCENT FIRESTOPPING

    A. Dow-Corning's FireStop Intumescent Wrap Strip.

    B. 3M Brand Fire Barrier Caulk, CP 25N/S or CP 25S/L.

    C. Conforming with ASTM E84 and UL1479, 2 hour.

    06 SUBSTITUTIONS

    A. The following manufacturers are acceptable subject to requirements of this section:

    1. For Safing Insulation:

    a) Owens-Corning

    2. For Fire Caulk:

    a) International Protective Coatings Corp/Oakhurst, N.J.

   PART 3 - EXECUTION

    07 INSTALLATION OF SAFING INSULATION

    A. Install fire-barrier safing insulation in accordance with manufacturer's published recommendations and without visible gaps or separations.

    B. Tightly pack fire-barrier insulation in the following locations:

    1. At large penetrations through floor slabs and roof decks.

    2. At openings between floor slabs and walls.

    3. As required for code compliance.

    4. Elsewhere as shown on drawings.

    B. At slab edge and curtainwall caulk joints or seal with foil-scrim tape.

    3.02 INSTALLATION OF FIRE CAULK

    A. Fire Caulk:

    1. Contractor shall seal all penetrations through fire-rated construction to the satisfaction of governing code authorities.

    2. Should the Contractor elect to use fire caulk, installation shall comply with manufacturer's tested procedures for the fire-rating of the construction involved. Provide submittals to Architect, including appropriate test for intended use.

    3. Use fire caulk as required to meet code requirements.

    3.03 INSTALLATION OF INTUMESCENT FIRESTOPPING

    A. Comply with manufacturer's tested procedures to maintain fire rating through the penetration.

    B. Locations: Use intumescent firestopping wherever a non-rated material, such as PVC pipe, penetrates fire-rated construction; or as required for code compliance.

    3.04 CLEAN-UP

    A. Trim excess material flush with adjacent surface.

    B. Remove spills, leave areas in undamaged clean condition.
