PART 3 - EXECUTION
05 INSTALLATION
A. General: Except as otherwise indicated, comply with the following requirements.
1. Install valves where required for proper operation of piping and equipment, including valves in branch lines where necessary to isolate sections of piping. Locate valves so as to be accessible and so that separate support can be provided when necessary.
2. Install valves when stems pointed up, in vertical position where possible, but in no case with stems pointed downward for horizontal plane unless unavoidable. Install valve drains with hose-end adapter for each valve that must be installed with stem below horizontal plane.
B. Insulation: Where insulation is indicated, install extended-stem valves, arranged in proper manner to receive insulation.
C. Mechanical Actuators: Install mechanical actuators with chain operators where indicated, and where valves 4" and larger are mounted more than 7'-0" above floor in mechanical rooms, boiler rooms; and where recommended by valve manufacturer because of valve size, pressure differential or other operating condition making manual operation difficult. Extend chain to about 5'-0" above floor and hook to clips to clear aisle passage.
D. Valve System: Select and install valves with outside screw and yoke stems, except provide inside screw non-rising stem valves where headroom prevents full opening of OS&Y valves.
E. Non-Metallic Disc: Limit selection and installation of valves with non-metallic discs to locations indicated and where foreign material in piping system can be expected to prevent tight shutoff of metal seated valves.
F. Renewable Seats: Select and install valves with renewable seats, except where otherwise indicated.
G. Fluid Control: Except as otherwise indicated, install gate, ball, globe, and butterfly valves to comply with ANSI B31.9. Where throttling is indicated or recognized as principal reason for valve, install globe or butterfly valves.
H. Swing Check Valves: Install in horizontal position with hinge pin horizontally perpendicular to center line of pipe. Install for proper direction of flow.
I. Wafer Check Valves: Install between 2 flanges in horizontal or vertical position, position for proper direction of flow.
J. Horizontal Lift Check Valve: Install in horizontal piping line with stem vertically upward, position for proper direction of flow.
K. Spring Loaded Horizontal Lift Check Valve: Install in horizontal piping line with stem vertically upward, position for proper direction of flow.
L. Sizes: Unless otherwise indicated, provide valves of same size as upstream pipe size.
M. Operators: Provide handwheels, fastened to valve stem, for valves other than quarter-turn. Provide lever handle for quarter-turn valves, 6" and smaller, other than plug valves. Provide one wrench for every 10 plug valves. Provide gear operators for quarter-turn valves 8" and larger.
06 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING
A. Valve Adjustment: After piping systems have been tested and put into service, but before final testing, adjusting, and balancing, inspect each valve for possible leaks. Adjust or replace packing to stop leaks, replace valve if leak persists.
B. Valve Identification: Tag each valve in accordance with Division-15 section "Mechanical Identification".
C. Cleaning: Clean factory-finished surfaces. Repair any marred or scratched surfaces with manufacturer's touch-up paint.
