02 PIPE AND EQUIPMENT IDENTIFICATION AND STENCILING

    A. Identify exposed and concealed piping by stenciling with markings 3/4 inch high for piping 2 inches and smaller and two inches in height for larger piping. Minimum six inch long flow arrows shall designate type of service and direction of flow. In mechanical rooms, powerhouse, fan rooms and similar exposed locations, piping shall be stenciled at valves and intervals not to exceed 25 feet if valves do not occur in that distance. Exposed piping shall be marked at least once in each room. In concealed spaces such as above ceilings, piping shall be stenciled at valves, flanges, unions, elbows and at distances not more than 50 feet apart should no fittings or valves occur. Piping in chases shall be stenciled once at each floor level. Markings shall be easily visible from floor or usual point of vision.

    B. Piping requiring stenciling shall be as follows.

    1. Domestic/Potable Cold Water.

    2. Domestic/Potable Hot Water.

    3. Natural Gas.

    4. Sanitary Waste and Vent.

    5. Compressed air (non-clinical).

    B. Shutoff valves for every type of service shall be securely tagged with a numbered brass valve tag 1-1/2 inches in diameter. A master plan and index list shall be provided showing location and service of each valve and shall be framed and mounted under glass in the mechanical room or other location designated by the Owner, Owner's Representative, or Architect/Engineer.

    C. The following equipment shall be provided with engraved bakelite nameplates attached by rivets, or screws, giving the name of each piece of equipment:

    1. Domestic/Potable Water Heater(s).

    2. Reduced Pressure Backflow Preventers.

    D. Stenciling and/or labeling shall not be performed until painting required under architectural and engineering sections of this specification has been performed.
